A configuration issue has been discovered that can cause the PTO to be inoperative and the PCM to set a P258E fault. The symptom most often associated with this issue is that immediately after being returned from a dealer, the PTO will shut off after 5 seconds and the PCM will set a P258E.

NOTE: P258E is not a regulatory fault. The CHECK ENGINE light may not be illuminated.

This issue is occurring because the Central Body Controller (CBC) was reprogrammed and the reprogramming caused the PTO switch configurations to be erased. To get the system to function again, the CBC will need to be  reconfigured by a dealer. This issue can be seen in 2013 through 2016 model year 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks equipped with a PTO Prep. (Sales Codes LBN or LBV) A software change that will cause the switch configurations to be saved during reprogramming was implemented in 2017.

A STAR Case has been released to the dealers. The Case number is S1608000300.

If your vehicle is experiencing this issue, please take it to your nearest dealer and inform the service personnel of the issue and give them this STAR Case number. They will verify that your vehicle is from the suspect group and reconfigure the vehicle as necessary.
